We are often asked what the difference is between our finishing styles. To make your decision earlier, we have put together a few pictures of each finishing style for your reference.
Straight/Saddle stitch: The straight/saddle stitch is our standard finishing style on most of our custom leather products. This is a hand stitching using two needles – rather than a machine which uses one needle and a “lock” stitch. The problem with machine stitching is that if one loop/stitch is cut, it quickly unravels all the stitching. The hand stitching, however, does not have this issue. Each stitch is independent from the stitch next to it – increasing the longevity and durability of the custom leather piece.

Whipstitch lacing: The whipstitch lacing is done with a leather lace (instead of a cotton thread). The lacing is thicker than a thread. With whipstitch lacing, the leather lace goes around the edge of the custom leather piece – giving it a texture (of sorts). Due to the extra time involved, the whipstitch lace finish is an additional charge of $60.

Double loop lacing: Our double loop lace finish is the most intricate/ornate finish we offer. It’s considered the “gold standard” in leather work finishing styles. The double loop lacing finish completely encloses the edges of any given custom leather piece with a braided edge appearance. Due to the additional time involved in this finish style, there is an additional charge of $120 for double loop lacing finish.

Edge finishing options are available at checkout for most of our custom leather products. If you select a product (such as a standard/permanently bound journal) that does not give you the option, and would like some sort of edge finish, simply give us a call at 800-243-0699 and we would be happy to help you!
